Fortifications of Vauban
Fortifications of Vauban consists of 12 groups of fortified buildings and sites along the western, northern and eastern borders of France. They represent the finest examples of the work of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), a military engineer of King Louis XIV. The serial property includes towns built from scratch by Vauban, citadels, urban bastion walls and bastion towers. There are also mountain forts, sea forts, a mountain battery and two mountain communication structures. This property is inscribed as bearing witness to the peak of classic fortifications, typical of western military architecture. Vauban also played a major role in the history of fortification in Europe and on other continents until the mid-19th century.

Outstanding Universal Value
The work of Vauban constitutes a major contribution to universal military architecture. It crystallises earlier strategic theories into a rational system of fortifications based on a concrete relationship to territory. It bears witness to the evolution of European fortification in the 17th century and produced models used all over the world up to the mid-19th century, thereby illustrating a significant period of history.
Criterion (i): Vauban’s work bears witness to the peak of classic bastioned fortification, typical of western military architecture of modern times.
Criterion (ii): Vauban played a major role in the history of fortification. The imitation of his standard-models of military buildings in Europe and on the American continent, the dissemination in Russian and Turkish of his theoretical thinking along with the use of the forms of his fortification as a model for fortresses in the Far East, bear witness to the universality of his work.
Criterion (iv): Vauban’s work illustrates a significant period of human history. It is a work of the mind applied to military strategy, architecture and construction, civil engineering, and economic and social organisation.
The property guarantees the integrity and authenticity, and reflects the various facets of Vauban’s work. Its legal protection is satisfactory; the administration by the State and the local authorities provides satisfactory guarantees and responses regarding the natural and tourism risks involved. Pooling experience in the areas of restoration and enhancement of the properties within the Network of Major Vauban Sites has already begun.

Abstract>
In 1899, the visiting Prince Heinrich of Prussia expressed his astonishment to Emperor Gojong at a traditional archery demonstration. The Prince, hailing from a militarized Prussian culture, sought out demonstrations of Korean martial arts, and Archery was the most impressive among the arts demonstrated. He was familiar with Turkish and Hungarian Archery of Europe, which were similar to Korean Archery. Prince Heinrich suggested making the art into a national sport. The emperor, convinced by the Prince, decreed "let people enjoy archery to develop their physical strength" and established an archery club. In the subsequent standardization of Korean archery, the nature of the bow and the arrow was standardized, as was the range of the targets. Korean traditional archery now uses one specific type of composite bow, bamboo arrows, and a standard target at a standard distance of 120 bo (about 145 meters). Korean Archery as a sport developed under the Japanese Occupation, its textbook, "Joseon eui Goongdo" being published in 1920.

In-Souk Cho has been an archer since 2009 and is a member of the HwangHakJeong Korean Archery Range in Jongno-gu; she received two trophies from IAA-Bhutan International Traditional Archery Tournament in 2019. She is the International Co-director of the UIA Work Programme for Heritage and Cultural Identity. She is also Vice-president of ICOMOS-ISCARSAH. She has a Ph.D in Architecture (Architectural History & Theory), specializing in historic conservation and restoration.

In the early 19th century, the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), the last Vietnamese monarchy, was established in a region on the southern border of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), China. This new Dynasty follows the way of ruling a nation and a concept of constructing a capital city from China. On the other hand, the Nguyen Dynasty also adopted the Vauban Style, a well- established style of fortification in Europe, for the construction of the outermost enclosure of its capital city.
This paper explains a description of the capital city in historical documents of Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi (大南一統志) and Dai Nam Hoi Dien Su Le (大南會典事例). In addition, this paper shows historic records of the capital city of the Nguyen dynasty in the 19th century and a basic arrangement based on a satellite photograph so that we can understand the present situation and the description of the Bulletin des Amis du Vieux Hue (B.A.V.H.), that is, the French documents compiled during French territorial colony period. The capital city planning of ‘Thua Tien Phu’ Hue (承天府) and the arrangement were carried out under the influence of the grid system and the Vanban style, and the possibility can be suggested that the royal palace, the street and the walls were united in the plan idea.
Furthermore, this paper focuses on dimensions in the site planning of the capital city. Especially, we aim to analyze the relative positions of main components of the capital city (walls, streets, Imperial City, Imperial Canal, etc.) with historic sources, and measurement data from our original field survey.

2020 AKS Graduate Fellowship Application Guidelines
The Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS), the Academy of Korean Studies(AKS), which is responsible to the Ministry of Education, is a research-oriented graduate school in the fields of humanities and social sciences pertinent to Korea. It was established in 1980 with the aim of nurturing scholars who will contribute to the development and globalization of Korean studies. Since then, GSKS has been providing intensive research-oriented education through eminent professors’ close mentoring of students. Currently, approximately 300 students, including about 130 international students from 35 different countries, are enrolled in the Master’s and doctoral degree program at GSKS. The AKS Graduate Fellowship is GSKS’ non-degree program which invites international graduate students to the AKS and supports them for six months, providing them with a momentum to grow to be a next generation of promising scholars in Korean studies. AKS Graduate Fellows for the period from 1st September 2020 to 28th February 2021 are now being sought. Those who aspire to widen and deepen their knowledge of Korea by conducting research at GSKS are very welcome to apply.
1. Fellowship Benefits
A. Monthly stipend of KRW750,000 is provided.
B. An economy-class round trip airfare at actual expense is provided within the limit set in the 2020 fiscal guidance of the Ministry of Economy and Finance*. * Please see the attachment.
C. The on-campus guesthouse is available free of charge.

2. Eligibility As of the beginning of the fellowship period (1 September 2020), applicants should meet all of the following criteria. A high level of proficiency in Korean language is preferred. Previous AKS Graduate Fellows are not eligible to apply again. Qualifications Nationality An applicant should be either a foreign national or a Korean national who has completed education outside of Korea which is compatible with Korea‘s elementary, middle, high school and college education. Educational Background Applicants must meet one of the following conditions : ① Applicants are enrolled in a Master’s or a doctoral degree program at an overseas university. Applicants completed coursework and are in the status of ABD (All But Dissertation) in a Master's degree program at an overseas university. ABD students in a doctoral degree program at an overseas ※ university are NOT eligible for AKS Graduate Fellowship, but eligible for AKS Fellowship run by the AKS’ Center for International Affairs. Fellows' Obligations A. Proof of Eligibility in Academic Background 1) Fellows must submit an original copy of the certificate or a letter from their home university that verifies their eligibility in terms of academic background, i.e. that they are enrolled in a Master’s degree program; or

Academic Advisor Fellows must designate one of the AKS’ professors whose specialty is most relevant to their research topic as their academic advisor. C. Taking Courses 1) Fellows must take at least one major-specific course taught by their academic advisor, or design an independent study with fellow’s own topic and research plan with their academic advisor. 2) Credits are not given for courses taken. Instead, courses are graded S(Successful) or U(Unsuccessful), and fellows must obtain "S" for courses taken. D. Presentation 1) Towards the end of the fellowship period, there will be a presentation session where fellows must present their research findings. 2) If fellows must leave Korea before the fellowship period ends due to the compelling issue, they should have an individual presentation. Time and place of the individual presentation must be settled by the fellow himself/herself and his/her academic advisor and informed to the Office of Academic & Student Affairs at least 1 week ahead. E. Final Report 1) Completing their research, fellows must submit either a thesis or a report summarizing their research findings to both the Office of Academic & Student Affairs and their academic advisors before they leave the country.2) A thesis or a report must be minimum 16,000 letters(including spaces) in length when written in Korean, and minimum 5,000 words when written in English, excluding the bibliography. F. When publishing a thesis or a book with research findings achieved during the fellowship period, fellows must state that they are the outcome of the research conducted with the support of the Graduate School of Korean Studies, the Academy of Korean Studies. G. Stay in Korea 1) Fellows must stay in Korea and concentrate on their research during the fellowship period. Exceptions can be made when fellows temporarily leave the country in order to present their research findings at an academic conference abroad with a prior approval of the Dean of the Graduate School of Korean Studies. 2) Towards the end of the fellowship period, fellows must submit the Certificate of Entry & Exit issued by the Community Service Center to the Office of Academic & Student Affairs and prove their stay in Korea. 3) During the fellowship period, fellows are not allowed to be engaged in other occupations for financial purposes. 4) During the fellowship period, fellows are not permitted to register at another educational institutions in Korea. H. As for items not stipulated here, fellows must abide by the rules and regulations of the AKS and decisions of the Graduate School Committee. I. Every obligation (especially submission of a final report, presentation of research findings, and submission of the Certificate of Entry & Exit) must be performed at least 2 weeks before departure. The e-ticket for returning flight as well as its purchase details should also be presented at least 2 weeks before departure.
9. Provision of Monthly Stipend and Airfare A. Monthly Stipend 1) The monthly stipend is provided in the beginning of each month, except for the first month of the fellowship period, when the monthly stipend is provided after fellows’ Foreigner Registration Cards are issued by Seoul Immigration Office and their Korean bank accounts made. 2) When the deduction cause arises such as delayed entrance, early departure, or staying abroad, the stipend will be deducted at the rate of 25,000won per day. B. Airfare 1) Round trip airfare is provided in the final month after all of the fellow’s obligations is performed. 2) Only 50% of the round trip airfare is offered in the following cases : a) If fellows arrive in Korea before the notification of the selection result and reside in the country b) If fellows stay in Korea after their visa for the Fellowship expires 3) Airfare is not provided under the following cases : a) If fellows fail to complete the required number of classes (15 weeks) and give up their research b) If fellows fail to submit a final report or they obtain "U(Unsuccessful)" for courses taken C. In the following cases, the provision of the AKS Graduate Fellowship can be cancelled and monthly stipend as well as airfare provided can be redeemed according to the decision of the Graduate School Committee : 1) If it turns out that the provided information on the application form is false and that the applicant is not qualified. 2) If fellows fail to meet obligations specified above. 3) With other reasons the Graduate School Committee acknowledges

2020 AKS Graduate Fellowship Application Guidelines
The Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS), the Academy of Korean Studies(AKS), which is responsible to the Ministry of Education, is a research-oriented graduate school in the fields of humanities and social sciences pertinent to Korea. It was established in 1980 with the aim of nurturing scholars who will contribute to the development and globalization of Korean studies. Since then, GSKS has been providing intensive research-oriented education through eminent professors’ close mentoring of students. Currently, approximately 300 students, including about 130 international students from 35 different countries, are enrolled in the Master’s and doctoral degree program at GSKS. The AKS Graduate Fellowship is GSKS’ non-degree program which invites international graduate students to the AKS and supports them for six months, providing them with a momentum to grow to be a next generation of promising scholars in Korean studies. AKS Graduate Fellows for the period from 1st September 2020 to 28th February 2021 are now being sought. Those who aspire to widen and deepen their knowledge of Korea by conducting research at GSKS are very welcome to apply.
1. Fellowship Benefits
A. Monthly stipend of KRW750,000 is provided.
B. An economy-class round trip airfare at actual expense is provided within the limit set in the 2020 fiscal guidance of the Ministry of Economy and Finance*. * Please see the attachment.
C. The on-campus guesthouse is available free of charge.
D. Fellowship Period : From 1 st Sep 2020 to 28th Feb 2021 (6 months in total)

E. Fellows will designate one of the AKS’ professors whose specialty is most relevant to their research topic as their academic advisor, who will guide them through the fellowship period.
F. Access to the AKS facilities including the library and Jangseogak Archives is given.
G. Korean language courses as well as cultural experience program are available free of charge.
2. Eligibility As of the beginning of the fellowship period (1 September 2020), applicants should meet all of the following criteria. A high level of proficiency in Korean language is preferred. Previous AKS Graduate Fellows are not eligible to apply again. Qualifications Nationality An applicant should be either a foreign national or a Korean national who has completed education outside of Korea which is compatible with Korea‘s elementary, middle, high school and college education. Educational Background Applicants must meet one of the following conditions : ① Applicants are enrolled in a Master’s or a doctoral degree program at an overseas university. Applicants completed coursework and are in the status of ABD (All But Dissertation) in a Master's degree program at an overseas university. ABD students in a doctoral degree program at an overseas ※ university are NOT eligible for AKS Graduate Fellowship, but eligible for AKS Fellowship run by the AKS’ Center for International Affairs. Fellows' Obligations A. Proof of Eligibility in Academic Background 1) Fellows must submit an original copy of the certificate or a letter from their home university that verifies their eligibility in terms of academic background, i.e. that they are enrolled in a Master’s degree program; or
② completed coursework of a Master’s degree program; or ③ enrolled in a doctoral degree program and not yet in the ABD(All But Dissertation) status as of 1 September 2020. 2) Submission Deadline : 21 September 2020 (Within 3 weeks after the fellowship period begins) Failure to do so will lead to revocation of the fellowship. ※ B. Academic Advisor Fellows must designate one of the AKS’ professors whose specialty is most relevant to their research topic as their academic advisor. C. Taking Courses 1) Fellows must take at least one major-specific course taught by their academic advisor, or design an independent study with fellow’s own topic and research plan with their academic advisor. 2) Credits are not given for courses taken. Instead, courses are graded S(Successful) or U(Unsuccessful), and fellows must obtain "S" for courses taken. D. Presentation 1) Towards the end of the fellowship period, there will be a presentation session where fellows must present their research findings. 2) If fellows must leave Korea before the fellowship period ends due to the compelling issue, they should have an individual presentation. Time and place of the individual presentation must be settled by the fellow himself/herself and his/her academic advisor and informed to the Office of Academic & Student Affairs at least 1 week ahead. E. Final Report 1) Completing their research, fellows must submit either a thesis or a report summarizing their research findings to both the Office of Academic & Student Affairs and their academic advisors before they leave the country.2) A thesis or a report must be minimum 16,000 letters(including spaces) in length when written in Korean, and minimum 5,000 words when written in English, excluding the bibliography. F. When publishing a thesis or a book with research findings achieved during the fellowship period, fellows must state that they are the outcome of the research conducted with the support of the Graduate School of Korean Studies, the Academy of Korean Studies. G. Stay in Korea 1) Fellows must stay in Korea and concentrate on their research during the fellowship period. Exceptions can be made when fellows temporarily leave the country in order to present their research findings at an academic conference abroad with a prior approval of the Dean of the Graduate School of Korean Studies. 2) Towards the end of the fellowship period, fellows must submit the Certificate of Entry & Exit issued by the Community Service Center to the Office of Academic & Student Affairs and prove their stay in Korea. 3) During the fellowship period, fellows are not allowed to be engaged in other occupations for financial purposes. 4) During the fellowship period, fellows are not permitted to register at another educational institutions in Korea. H. As for items not stipulated here, fellows must abide by the rules and regulations of the AKS and decisions of the Graduate School Committee. I. Every obligation (especially submission of a final report, presentation of research findings, and submission of the Certificate of Entry & Exit) must be performed at least 2 weeks before departure. The e-ticket for returning flight as well as its purchase details should also be presented at least 2 weeks before departure.

Monthly Stipend 1) The monthly stipend is provided in the beginning of each month, except for the first month of the fellowship period, when the monthly stipend is provided after fellows’ Foreigner Registration Cards are issued by Seoul Immigration Office and their Korean bank accounts made. 2) When the deduction cause arises such as delayed entrance, early departure, or staying abroad, the stipend will be deducted at the rate of 25,000won per day. B. Airfare 1) Round trip airfare is provided in the final month after all of the fellow’s obligations is performed. 2) Only 50% of the round trip airfare is offered in the following cases : a) If fellows arrive in Korea before the notification of the selection result and reside in the country b) If fellows stay in Korea after their visa for the Fellowship expires 3) Airfare is not provided under the following cases : a) If fellows fail to complete the required number of classes (15 weeks) and give up their research b) If fellows fail to submit a final report or they obtain "U(Unsuccessful)" for courses taken C. In the following cases, the provision of the AKS Graduate Fellowship can be cancelled and monthly stipend as well as airfare provided can be redeemed according to the decision of the Graduate School Committee : 1) If it turns out that the provided information on the application form is false and that the applicant is not qualified. 2) If fellows fail to meet obligations specified above. 3) With other reasons the Graduate School Committee acknowledges

A Study on the Development of Fortresses in the West - from Vitruvius to Vauban -
123오늘날 전 세계의 다양한 城들은 특정 시대에 국한해 축조된 것 뿐 아니라, 여러 시대에 걸쳐 발생한 지역, 국가 간 분쟁, 전쟁에 따라 각 지형에 순응하고 효과적 공방을 위한 보강과 보완의 과정을 거듭하며 발전해왔다. 본고를 통해 서구를 중심으로 초기 로마제국시대부터 중세, 르네상스, 바로크 시대까지 城制발전사를 분석한다. 세부적으로 로마 시대 군사건축가 비트루비우스, 후기 르네상스 시대 바티스타 안토넬리, 바로크 시대 보방과 같은 전문군사건축가의 다양한 요새 축성론과 영향사를 분석한다. 또한 기존에 국내에 알려지지 않았던 이들의 요새건축론이 어떤 방식으로 16 ~ 17세기 유럽을 비롯한 중남미, 러시아 등지에서 발전하는 지 알아본다. 따라서 본 연구는 향후 동서양간 城制 상호영향사 연구의 기초 자료의 초석이 될 수 있으며, 나아가 유네스코 세계유산 등재를 위한 인류 문명 교류사 정립에 중요 자료가 될 수 있다.
There are many fortifications all over the world. They are built not only in a certain period but also in many successive periods. They were developed and well integrated with their confronted nature, moreover, they were reinforced and modified each times in order to defend and attack effectively in line with local conflicts and international wars. This research aims to analyse the development history of fortifications from early roman empire era via medieval, renaissance to baroque times centering on the european region. In detail, it is to analyse various theories on the fortification formulated by military architect Vitruvius during early roman empire era, Battista Antonelli during late renaissance and Vauban during baroque times. On the other hand, it is to analyse how those fortification system was developed not only in the european region but also transferred to latin america, south america, russian region etc. In conclusion, this research can be a fundamental material for the study on the interchange of the fortification system between the east and the west in the futire, moreover, it will help the preliminary study on the‘interchange of human values’ for the UNESCO World Heritage nomination.

Europe is known for its magnificent castles and fortresses, but only a few survive in their original form. Since reconstructing them would be financially impossible and culturally abhorrent, a London-based creative agency named NeoMam Studios have decided to digitally restore them to their prime. Using old paintings, blueprints, and textual documents that describe the strongholds, the design team from NeoMam Studios have resuscitated over a dozen castles across Europe.
The Poenari Castle in Romania was constructed around the beginning of the 13th century. It was the home of the infamous Vlad the Impaler, son of Vlad Dracul, whose reputation for cruelty and his patronymic inspired the name of the vampire Count Dracula, in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula.
