Viet Nam's World Heritage: 9 Sites, from Limestone Towers in the Sea to a Living Zen Mountain
English version

Viet Nam has 9 World Heritage properties, the second largest national list in Southeast Asia after Indonesia (10). The composition is more interesting than the number. Tower karst rising from the sea, a 13th century Zen mountain, a last dynasty's capital, a trading port and a Champa sanctuary, two capital citadels, and a karst valley sometimes called Ha Long Bay on land all sit on one country's list. In 2025, that list changed again: one new cultural property was added, and one natural property was extended across the border into Laos. The Viet Nam chapter is therefore not the story of an old list, but of a list still in motion.
9 Properties: 6 Cultural, 2 Natural, 1 Mixed
Viet Nam accepted the World Heritage Convention on 19 October 1987. It now holds 6 cultural properties, 2 natural properties, and 1 mixed property. No property is on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The Tentative List has 9 properties. There is 1 transboundary property, Phong Nha-Ke Bang, shared with Laos.
Cultural properties (6)
- Complex of Hué Monuments (1993): the capital of unified Viet Nam from 1802, and the political, cultural, and religious centre of the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945). Citadel, Imperial City, Forbidden Purple City, and imperial tombs along the Perfume River, laid out according to eastern capital planning.
- Hoi An Ancient Town (1999): a historic trading port town.
- My Son Sanctuary (1999): the religious sanctuary of the Champa kingdom.
- Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Hanoi (2010): an imperial citadel built in the 11th century by the Ly dynasty, a political centre of Dai Viet for almost thirteen centuries.
- Citadel of the Ho Dynasty (2011): a citadel built in 1397, between the Ma and Buoi rivers.
- Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex of Monuments and Landscapes (2025): twelve sites of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism. See below.
Natural properties (2)
- Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago (1994, 2000, 2023): the world's best known example of marine-invaded tower karst. See below.
- Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Hin Nam No National Park (2003, 2015, 2025): a vast limestone cave region, extended in 2025 to include Laos's Hin Nam No National Park as a transboundary property.
Mixed property (1)
- Trang An Landscape Complex (2014): Viet Nam's only mixed property, combining tower karst scenery with more than 30,000 years of human occupation, including the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.
Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago: Limestone Towers Invaded by the Sea
Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago covers 65,650 hectares and 1,133 islands and islets. UNESCO describes it as the most extensive and best known example of marine-invaded tower karst in the world. In a humid tropical climate, clusters of conical peaks (fengcong) and isolated towers (fenglin) were invaded by the sea, producing vegetated limestone towers and pillars, marine notch caves, and lakes in drowned dolines. It is inscribed under criterion (vii) for scenic beauty and criterion (viii) for geological process.
Its second face is biological. Endemic species include the Livistona halongensis palm and the Cat Ba Tiger Gecko; threatened species include the Keeled Box Turtle, the Asian Small-clawed Otter, the Mainland Serow, and the King Cobra. The flagship species is the Cat Ba Langur, a Critically Endangered endemic primate with a small population, affected by disturbance from tourism, restricted gene flow, and fragmented subpopulations. Its conservation is a national priority.
Ha Long Bay's history reads in three steps: first inscription in 1994, an extension of criteria in 2000, and a boundary modification in 2023 that added the Cat Ba Archipelago. The 2023 change was more than an extension. It created Viet Nam's first inter-provincial heritage model, spanning Quang Ninh Province (Ha Long Bay) and Hai Phong City (Cat Ba). Management is split accordingly: the Ha Long Bay Management Board on one side, Cat Ba National Park and the Management Board of Cat Ba Bays on the other. UNESCO's statement of value calls harmonious joint effort between the two localities an essential element of successful management, and notes that institutionalising the coordination arrangements remains a task.
Conservation pressure comes from three directions. First, a busy sea shared by tourism, marine transport, fisheries, and daily life. Second, development projects inside and beyond the property, for which heritage impact assessments are required in the buffer zone and adjacent areas. Third, pollution. The World Heritage Committee examined Ha Long Bay's state of conservation in 2023, 2024, and 2025. In December 2024, Viet Nam's Department of Cultural Heritage confirmed that Ha Long Bay was not on the List of World Heritage in Danger, while reporting Committee recommendations on stronger pollution control, impact assessments for projects in the protection zone, a detailed zoning map, and an invited field assessment mission. Not being in danger and receiving repeated recommendations must be read together: the first is the current assessment, the second is the condition for keeping it that way.
The Yen Tu Complex: The Mountain Where a King Became a Monk
On 12 July 2025, at its 47th session in Paris, the World Heritage Committee inscribed the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex as Viet Nam's ninth World Heritage property. Twelve component parts across three localities, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, and Hai Phong, make it the country's second inter-provincial inscription. It is inscribed under criterion (iii), as exceptional testimony to a unique cultural tradition, and criterion (vi), for its direct association with living ideas and beliefs.
Truc Lam (Bamboo Forest) Zen Buddhism was founded in the 13th century by Tran kings, above all King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong, who gave up the throne for the monastic path. Harmonising Mahayana Buddhism with Confucian ethics, Taoist cosmology, and Vietnamese local beliefs, it promoted peace, reconciliation, and harmony, and, in UNESCO's account, gave spiritual foundation to an independent state and a resilient society in a century of global instability. Temples, hermitages, pilgrimage routes, steles, and woodblocks at Yen Tu trace every stage of that tradition, from founding and institutionalisation to revival and continuing transmission. The sites remain vibrant religious centres and pilgrimage destinations. Truc Lam's call for active engagement in the lives of people and the affairs of the country means seclusion in the mountains was never the whole story: Yen Tu is a living sanctuary, not a museum ruin.
The tasks for a newly inscribed property are written alongside the celebration. Sand mining and illegal coal mining in the upstream buffer zones must be prevented, and domestic wastewater and agricultural fertiliser run-off affecting rivers must be addressed. A formal tourism management plan is needed for rising visitor numbers, and interpretation must follow the core narrative of Truc Lam Buddhism's development. The reassuring note is that no threat of immediate or significant concern was identified. Yen Tu's task is not crisis management, but keeping a living sanctuary alive.
The Next Candidates: 9 Tentative List Properties, 3 Added in 2026
Viet Nam's Tentative List holds 9 properties, spanning 1991 to 2026, a 35 year range.
- Huong Son Complex of Natural Beauty and Historical Monuments (1991): the oldest candidate.
- The Area of Old Carved Stone in Sapa (1997): a prehistoric rock carving area.
- Cat Tien National Park (2006), Con Moong Cave (2006)
- Ba Be - Na Hang Natural Heritage Area (2017)
- Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological site (2022): an ancient port city site associated with Funan.
- Van Long-Kim Bang-Tam Chuc Sanctuary: Delacour's Langur Bio-cultural Landscape (2026)
- Cu Chi Tunnels (2026): the Viet Nam War underground tunnel network.
- The Complex of Co Loa Ancient Citadel (2026): an ancient state's citadel.
Three additions in a single year, 2026, stand out against a candidate from 1991 that has waited more than three decades. Cu Chi Tunnels and Co Loa Citadel represent opposite ends of Vietnamese history, modern and ancient. Which one moves first toward a nomination dossier is not yet on a confirmed timetable. The generational change in the Tentative List has, however, begun.
Current Debates
- Carrying capacity versus tourism: Ha Long Bay is among Viet Nam's most visited properties. Keeping visitor numbers and development within ecological carrying capacity is the practical condition that decides whether it stays off the Danger List.
- Two localities, one property: Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba and Yen Tu are both inter-provincial properties. Without institutionalised joint management across administrative boundaries, a boundary change is only half a success.
- Karst across a border: the 2025 transboundary extension of Phong Nha-Ke Bang creates a joint Viet Nam-Laos conservation task. Caves, groundwater, and wildlife do not recognise borders. Management must not either.
- Restoring a living heritage: Yen Tu's temples, damaged by war and time, have been restored with traditional materials and methods. Whether restoration continues authenticity or alters the original will keep being judged case by case.
- Which Viet Nam next?: ancient Co Loa, medieval Hue and Hoi An, modern Cu Chi. The Tentative List also asks which era's face Viet Nam will present to the world next.
Closing
Seen through the eyes of fortifications, Viet Nam offers Hue's citadel and Imperial City, the great stone walls of the Ho Dynasty Citadel, and the ancient citadel of Co Loa waiting on the Tentative List. But what runs through all nine properties is not walls, but water and mountains: karst invaded by the sea, caves and groundwater below ground, river landscapes, and a pilgrimage road up a sacred mountain. Citadels are boundaries people built between that water and those mountains. What Viet Nam's list shows is movement across boundaries: a king who entered the mountains and became a monk, caves that continue across a national border, two localities managing one bay together. The two changes of 2025, the inscription of Yen Tu and the transboundary extension of Phong Nha-Ke Bang, point in the same direction. Heritage is not confined within one country. The Viet Nam chapter records nine places of that movement.
